What is Motherwort Tea?

Motherwort tea is among the most used medicinal plants in Chinese medicine and is widely spread throughout Asia and Europe. It is a herbaceous plant, high between 60 and 100 cm, decorated with leaves with long stems, placed on a hollow stem, on the top of which are situated pink or violet blossom. It is the blossomed part (and sometimes the leaves) used for the preparation of teas, infusions, potions, compresses.

What is it used for?

Motherwort is used to treat anaemia, flatulence (gasses), painful urination, headaches, anxiety, stress, and low blood pressure. The leaves help with burns, so compresses are prepared for them. The herb is also known to help relieve painful menstruation, prevent uterine infections, heal infertility, and help ease the climacteric. In Chinese medicine, healers applied it in an irregular cycle, as well as in other disorders of the sexual system. It is also known that drinking motherwort tea has a soothing effect on muscles, which also makes it useful for the heart. Additionally, it strengthens the nervous system and has a relaxing effect. It is common to combine the healing herb combines with other herbal teas!

Does it have any side effects?

The herb of the devil’s mouth has a substantial effect on the body, so be careful with the dose. It is imperative to consult a doctor or homoeopath on what quantity to take because dosing is strictly individual and depends on the age, weight and health of the patient. There is also controversy about using the herb during pregnancy. Most doctors are firmly opposed because the motherwort’s intake stimulates blood flow to the uterus and prevents bleeding that may be dangerous for both the fetus and the mother. But others recommend it in minimal quantities because of its calming effect.
